In the unfortunate event of the death of a BPM (Branch Postmaster), a lump sum amount of Rs. 10,000/- is provided as welfare assistance to the family of the deceased. However, whether this amount is payable depends on specific conditions regarding the contribution to the welfare fund.

  1. Welfare, Not an Allowance: The Rs. 10,000/- is not an allowance but a welfare amount intended to support the deceased’s family.
  2. Contribution Requirement: A minimum of 5 years of continuous contribution to the welfare fund is required for the payment to be made in the event of the BPM’s death. This is a crucial criterion for eligibility for the welfare grant.
  3. Recent Increase in Amount: The welfare amount has been increased to Rs. 11,000/- effective 01.07.2024, according to the order dated 11.09.2024.
  4. Immediate Financial Assistance: In cases of death, immediate financial assistance is provided to meet funeral expenses. This is an advance against the terminal benefits payable to the deceased, and it is adjustable from the terminal benefits.
  5. Conditions for Retirement Payments: A 5-year contribution is required only for the one-time payment after retirement, starting from a minimum of Rs. 1,000/- with increases based on the length of service.

In summary, the Rs. 10,000/- welfare amount is not automatically payable in every case of death but is subject to the condition of having contributed to the welfare fund for at least 5 years. Immediate financial assistance for funeral expenses is provided separately and is adjusted from terminal benefits.
