If you’re currently a member of one union and wish to join a different one in the post office, it’s certainly possible. However, there are specific procedures you need to follow to make the switch. Below is an overview of the steps involved:
- Discontinue Subscription to the First Union
To start, you must stop your subscription to the first union. This is the first step in the process of changing unions. - Submit a Declaration to the New Union
Once you’ve stopped your subscription with the first union, you can submit a declaration to the new union you wish to join. The new union will then forward this declaration to the Postmaster (PM) for approval. - Timing of the Application
It’s important to note that this change can only be made during the month of April each year. If you miss this window, you will have to wait until the next April. - Submit an Application to the DDO
After submitting the declaration, you will need to apply to the Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO). This application is to request that they stop deducting union subscription fees for the first union from your salary. - Withdrawal of Membership
Once all the necessary steps are completed, you can officially withdraw your membership from the first union and become a member of the new union.
It’s also important to keep in mind that, according to the rules, no employee is allowed to be a member of more than one union at the same time.
Additional Information:
While employees can resign from their current union at any time, they must submit an application for discontinuing the deduction of union fees to the Head Office (HO).
However, if you wish to switch unions, you must apply through the new union in April. The membership fee for the new union will then be deducted from your salary starting in July of that year.
For more detailed information or clarification, you can always contact your Divisional Secretary (P3). They can provide you with a copy of the RSA Rules of 1993 to help guide you through the process.
