The Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA) is a government-backed savings scheme designed for the welfare of girl children. When it comes to opening an SSA for girls residing in orphanages, specific guidelines must be followed regarding the authorized guardian.

Who Can Open the Account?

For orphaned girls, the account can be opened under the guardianship of:

  1. Natural Guardian – If the biological father or mother is alive, they can act as the guardian.
  2. Legal Guardian – If the girl is under the care of an orphanage or child welfare institution, the legal guardian (as per the official certificate) is authorized to open the account on her behalf.

Required Documents

  • Birth certificate of the girl child
  • Identity and address proof of the legal guardian (if applicable)
  • Certificate of guardianship issued by the competent authority (for orphaned children)

It is recommended to check with the nearest post office for any additional requirements before proceeding with the account opening.
